Hi there. It's obviously been a while--over two months in fact. I'm sorry that I've not updated at all over the Winter, but I know you've been just fine without me writing to you. Perhaps when you've been bored enough to come to this site you have at least found that I've continued to update my pictures.
January and February were hard. Despite a masters degree in what comes down to recognizing and labeling feelings, I had a difficult time just figuring out how I was doing each day. On the one hand, I have continued to enjoy traveling, Vienna, and forming relationships with my new group of students. Who has an excuse to feel down when your days involve cooking good food, showing people your favorite spots in a city, and booking accommodations for a spring break in Switzerland? Please don't get me wrong--this is part of why I haven't written much--I realize that I've been ridiculously spoiled to have the job I've had this year, and I've felt pretty silly airing any complaints to anyone. What it all comes down to is this: nothing on this earth will ever make me happy for long, and there will always be a part of me which feels lonely and out of place.
As C. S. Lewis writes in Mere Christianity, "If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world."
Learning this lesson yet again has been painful at times but ultimately good in the deepest sense of the word. I'll leave it at that. Also, Vienna is no longer completely dark at 4:30 in the afternoon...that helps too.
But I do have some nice pictures to show you. Now that I'm launching my job search and trying to resist the idea of staying another year in Vienna, I'm sure I'll be updating more regularly (because, let's face it--writing this is loads more fun than writing a cover letter).
